Program:

Woven Decorations for the Holidays and Beyond

Swedish Woven Star

For our October meeting, on October 27, we will be making woven decorations. The samples that Vilija and Reba have been making are cardstock and fabric variations on 8 pointed stars, based on woven Swedish Window Stars, traditionally made from reed, birch bark or wood veneer. Other names include Finnish Star, Advent Star and Poinsettia. We have experimented and have come up with some nice techniques to make this a fun and creative process.

Joan will be showing how to make woven hearts. These are often made with reeds, but cardstock is a nice medium as well.

Reed Heart Basket

We have the library room for the afternoon. Bring a lunch and enjoy creating a few of these little decorations with your friends in the guild.  All the required supplies will be provided (including a wide selection of double sided cardstock), but if you have a rotary paper cutter or rotary cutter, ruler and mat set, it would be wonderful if you can bring that along.

Diablo Weavers' Exhibit at the Orinda Library

Thanks to Margie's initiative and Margie and Vilija following through with planning, Diablo Weavers will have an Exhibit at the Orinda Library during the month of November.

There are details to keep in mind, including filling out a liability document for the city of Orinda. If you have something you would like to display, please plan on bringing it as early as our September meeting. See general instructions on this page: November Library Exhibit

The release form to copy and a link to download a .pdf version of the file can be found here: Orinda Liability form

You can also get to both of the above pages through the left side menu, under Diablo Weavers.

Update: At the October meeting Margie and Vilija collected items to display, which included the member's name, woven structure, material used and for sale or NFS information as well as the release form. If you missed the meeting or have additional items, check with Margie about delivering them to her.

November 1, 11:00 am will be set up of the display.
December 1, 10:00 am, take down.
Items will be returned at the December holiday luncheon.

See the winter edition of CNCHNet for an article about the history of Diablo Weavers, written and photographed by Vilija.

Also from Vilija:
Vogue has an article about sheep shearing here in California in its latest issue. Stephany Wilkes, one of the featured shearers, will be speaking at the Treadles to Threads meeting November 29, 7 pm at the library.

Congratulations to Lillian, who was awarded the Edith Whiteman Memorial Award,  for handwoven artwork of the highest caliber of craftsmanship and technical ability.
Her piece Weaver's Knot was part of Small Expressions 2017, HGA's annual juried exhibit of small scale fiber art.
