March 2011

Late March Updates:

Fundraisers for victims of the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan:

Below you will find information about two fundraising events being held for the victims of the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan.

Aiko of Diablo Weavers is one of several women organizing these events. There will be craft items and a variety of food for sale as well as other activities. Items for sale include handwoven scarves and tapestries, a variety of fabrics, Japanese collectables and dishes, and Guatemalan crafts (hand woven textiles, beads and accessories).

Japanese Christian Church fundraiser on Saturday, April 2 in Walnut Creek (1955 Geary Rd.)

Fundraising Botique on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Aiko's house in Walnut Creek (1387 Wladen Rd.)

Looking ahead to the April meeting and the June picnic project:

Are you working on a Frog for the April competition? Vilija will have a catapult ready to launch your frog.
See how far the frogs can jump and what designs members came up with for a fiber-related frog, one that can
fly or just look interesting.

After the meeting the frogs will be forwarded to the CNCH 2011 Conference in Sutter Creek.

June Picnic Doubleweave Project:

How's it coming? If you are still in the planning stages these issues of Handwoven have some great inspiration:

Doubleweave and Deflected Doubleweave beginning on page 56

You can also just log into http://www.handwovenmagazine.com   and look for other info.

Here's a quote from Madelyn Van Der Hoogt:  "No weave structure overs as much variety and excitement to handweavers as doubleweave. Doubleweave allows maximum potential for working with pattern, creating woven texture, blending and contrasting colors, even making sculptural shapes. The possibilities are so many as to be almost overwhelming."

Check out her article in Handwoven, March/April 2010, pages 26 and 27 for great photos of just some of the possibilities.

If you don't think you want to try "plain, old" doubleweave , try deflected doubleweave. What amazing possibilities this structure has! You can actually weave "circles".

Good luck and hope you get inspired by the time June comes.

Diablo Weavers Guild meets once a month, September through June.
New members and guests are always welcome.

Meetings are usually on the Third Friday of the month at 10:00 am
at the Thurman Casey Library in Walnut Creek.
